Non-chlorine shock, primarily potassium monopersulfate (MPS), is a fast-acting, odorless oxidizer that clears cloudy pool or hot tub water by breaking down organic contaminants like lotions, sweat, and oils. It is not a sanitizer (it does not kill bacteria/algae) but enhances existing sanitizer efficiency, allowing swimming within 20–30 minutes.
  • Returns sparkle to dull, flat water
  • Can swim 15 minutes after treatment
  • Helps eliminate unpleasant odors & conditions that cause eye irritation
  • Non-chlorine, non-bleaching, pH neutral
  • Should be used weekly

When should you use it?

1. Immediately After Heavy Use

Whenever your pool or spa gets a sudden influx of people, it gets hit with a massive wave of organic contaminants.

  • When: Right after a pool party, a weekend of heavy family use, or a long soak with multiple friends in a hot tub.

  • Why: It nips chloramines in the bud before they can cause odors or cloudiness.

2. When You Notice "The Pool Smell" or Eye Irritation

If your water smells strongly of chemicals and people are complaining about burning eyes or itchy skin, it actually means your pool needs more oxidation, not less.

  • When: As soon as you notice that classic strong "chlorine" odor (which is actually the smell of chloramines).

  • Why: Non-chlorine shock quickly breaks down those smelly, irritating chloramines without sending your chlorine levels through the roof.

3. When the Water Looks Dull or Hazy

If the water has lost its sparkle but isn't quite green with algae yet, it usually means it's overloaded with fine organic debris.

  • When: When the water looks flat, hazy, or slightly cloudy.

  • Why: It burns off the microscopic debris, allowing your filter to catch the rest and restore clarity.

4. When You Want to Swim Right Away

This is the biggest logistical reason to use non-chlorine shock over standard liquid or granular chlorine shock.

  • When: You need to shock the water, but you also want to use the pool or hot tub later that same day.

  • Why: Traditional chlorine shock requires waiting anywhere from 8 to 24 hours for chemical levels to drop. With non-chlorine shock, you only have to wait 15 to 30 minutes for the powder to completely dissolve and circulate.
