The Bucket Test: How to Know If You Have a Leak
Before calling a pool professional, do this simple test at home. The bucket test is the standard first step for distinguishing evaporation from a real leak.
Fill a plastic bucket with pool water and set it on your pool step so the bucket is partially submerged. Mark the water level inside the bucket and the pool water level on the outside of the bucket with tape or a marker. Turn off your autofill valve if you have one, and leave everything — including your pump — running normally for 24 hours.
After 24 hours, compare the two levels. If the pool has lost significantly more water than the bucket, you likely have a leak. If the levels dropped by a similar amount, what you're seeing is normal evaporation.
Repeat the test with the pump off for another 24 hours.
